Haven't got the words to express how shocked I am with the news that this would be the new animated Optimus Prime come 2008... bad move Hasbro.
It's a bold new direction to TF character design but I do believe that most fans, like myself, prefer our bots looking as realistic as possible and not like this. CG is the best way to go IMO. Just that in previous attempts, they'd gotten really sh*tty writers so you won't expect to attract that large a fan-base even with CG.
Gen1 was great as there was still some seriousness to the storylines even though every episode was just one big toy commercial... but kids then dug how cool it was to see their favorite toy come to life on screen.
Beast Wars was a hit in its time as we had good writers like Furman and co. who managed to reach out to both old school Gen1 big kids and little kiddies along the way.
Beast Machines didn't quite make the cut as our favorite bots didn't look like bots and the storyline was twisted AND they tried forcing vegetables down our throats (an organic Cybertron??? bah!). The toys subsequently didn't sell as well as they should (the concept and designs for BM just didn't go down well).
Now we have this new animated series that looks so very much like a Batman or Teen Titans cartoon. It's so very Cartoon Network-ish. Even if the storyline is good, I personally don't see the toyline doing well (we want Transformers not some trans-morphing robot). I guess Hasbro's just trying to reach as broad a market as it can... oh, well... we'll just have to wait to see how it all turns out.
